Who is a good candidate for FUE hair transplant?

Not everyone is a good candidate for a FUE hair transplant. There are a few important factors that determine whether or not a hair transplant is suitable for you. Some of these include:

Health of your scalp

If you have Alopecia or other hair related diseases, you may not be a suitable candidate for a hair transplant. The donor area may lack the necessary healthy follicles in order to complete a successful hair transplant.

Extent of your hair loss

The amount of donor hair you possess will have an impact on the success rate of the procedure. If your hair loss is too extensive, you may not have enough healthy hair follicles to make the procedure successful.

In general, in order to be a good candidate for a hair transplant you will need to exercise, eat healthy and follow an active lifestyle for the treatment to have the best effect.

What you should know about FUE Hair Transplant

FUE involves taking healthy hair from a permanent area of the scalp, where the hairs are genetically programmed to continue growing for life. This is also referred to as the ‘donor area’. Healthy hairs are taken from permanent areas and grafted onto areas of the scalp that are in need of treatment, otherwise known as the ‘recipient area’.   FUE doesn’t leave much scarring. However, you should expect a few tiny holes in the donor area after surgery. They typically heal within a few days. The following are potential donor areas for FUE surgery:
  • Beard
  • Back
  • Upper chest hair
  • Scalp hair
FUE is commonly undertaken by younger individuals who like to wear their hair short (wherein a scar would be more visible) and desire denser, fuller hair. The procedure efficiently targets male pattern baldness and other hair loss problems.

How is FUE hair transplant carried out?

One can typically expect the following before an FUE procedure:
  1. A medical history check
  2. A scalp examination
  3. Assessments and plans for the FUE will be made
  4. A counselling session covering all aspects of the FUE surgery
  5. Your clinician will take specific notes of your donor area and recipient area
Thereafter, these are the typical steps involved in an FUE procedure:
  1. Hair from the donor area is trimmed down to 1-2mm in length
  2. Local anaesthesia is administered to the donor area
  3. Grafts are taken with the use of the sharp side of 0.8 to 1mm micropunches
  4. The scoring of the skin that contains the follicular unit occurs
  5. The dull side of the micro punch is used in the same area and is twisted, causing the loosening of the follicular unit
  6. Meanwhile, counter traction is applied to facilitate the penetration of the punch inside the dermis
  7. With the use of forceps, the graft is carefully taken out
  8. Grafts are carefully preserved in saline solution
  9. After the extraction is complete, grafts are implanted
It is crucial that the follicular units are intact and unharmed during the extraction process as they need to grow and flourish after being reinserted in the recipient area.

How much does FUE hair transplant cost in Singapore?

The cost of FUE hair transplant surgery in Singapore depends on how many hair grafts you need. This is influenced by the level of hair loss, your individual aspirations, and other factors. In general, the average cost per graft is $5. For procedures involving less than 1,500 grafts, the common cost per graft is $6.

FUE is a time-consuming procedure, and can only be done by professionals with a complex skillset and years of experience under their belt. This is one reason FUE is more expensive than FUT procedures.

What happens after FUE surgery?

There are a few important milestones that occur after an FUE procedure. Here’s a general timeline to consider:

  • 1 day later: Your clinician will remove your bandages and wash your scalp
  • 10 days later: Your clinician will remove your scabs.
  • 2 weeks later: Your first review with your clinician.
  • 4 months later: Your hair will begin to grow out.
  • 6 months later: Your second review with your clinician.
  • 10 to 15 months later: Your hair will continue to grow and thicken, eventually leaving you with a fuller, healthier-looking head of healthy hair.
  • 1 year later: Your third review with your clinician.

Are there side effects of FUE hair transplant?

FUE only requires a local anaesthetic and is a relatively risk-free and painless treatment with an excellent success rate. Most patients will find that their grafts yield excellent results.

In rare cases, patients may experience:

  • Bleeding near the donor area
  • Infection of the donor or recipient areas
  • Crusting, or occurrence of pus near the surgery area
  • Loss of sensation or numbness around the donor area

As such, while minimally invasive, it is essential your hair transplant is done by a certified medical professional with a stellar track record.
