Dark eye circles
Dark eye circles are when the skin beneath both eyes become darkened, giving the appearance of “panda eyes”.
Dark eye circles are a problem for many people. Due to a variety of lifestyle and genetic factors, some people have a much higher chance of developing dark eye circles. Dark eye circles might make someone look tired, disinterested or unmotivated, a huge no-no in the professional scene.
What causes dark eye circles?
Lack of sleep, as well as staring at television or computer screens, can affect circulation which makes dark circles more evident.
As we age, our skin also thins, becoming more translucent and letting underlying blood vessels show through, resulting in a purplish appearance.
Dark circles can be caused by many things such as:
- Stress
- Genetics
- Lack of sleep and fatigue

- Eyestrain (from computer or television screens)

- Medical conditions like allergies, eczema, thyroid problems and anaemia

What are the types of dark eye circles?
There are a few different types of dark eye circles, such as:
- Pigmented
This appears as a brown hue under the eye.
- Vascular
This appears as a blue or pink or purple hue under the eye with or without puffiness.
- Structural
This has a shadow hue and lower eye bags and grooves, plus loss of fat with a bony appearance.
- Mixed type
This is a combination of 2 or 3 of the above.
