Wrinkles
As we grow older, our skin loses its natural ability to produce collagen and elastin, two proteins that are essential for our skin to maintain a taut, healthy look. Our skin begins to lose its structure and becomes weaker, resulting in wrinkles.
Wrinkles tend to develop around areas that are commonly exposed to sunlight. Examples of places that wrinkles commonly develop are one’s face and hands.
What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles form due to a combination of factors, some of which are not within your control. They include:
- Age
As we grow older, the skin naturally loses elasticity due to a lack of collagen and elastin proteins. This makes our skin less taut and wrinkles start to form. Moreover, we produce less natural oils, making our skin drier and our wrinkles appear even more pronounced.
- Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light
Being under the sun isn’t always a bad thing, but for wrinkles, it unfortunately is. Exposure to UV light breaks down the skin’s connective tissues such as collagen and elastin fibres that lie in the deep dermis of the skin. UV radiation can speed up the natural ageing process and is a key culprit in early formation of wrinkles. - Smoking
Smoking is a bad habit that decreases the synthesis of collagen, which means it accelerates the ageing process and worsens the lack of elasticity in the skin, contributing to wrinkles and a tired-looking face. - Frequent facial expressions
If you frown often, that’s bad news. Facial movements and expressions like squinting, smiling or frowning can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. Whenever a facial muscle is used, grooves form underneath the skin. As we age, the skin loses its elasticity and flexibility, which means it is unable to spring back into place even after we stop making the facial expression. With repeated and frequent use of certain facial expressions, these grooves become permanently fixed on your face – something you definitely don’t want happening.
What are the types of wrinkles?
Wrinkles can appear anywhere on the skin, but most noticeably on the face. Here are some common wrinkles that you may find on your skin:
Frequent facial expressions
- Forehead lines
These run horizontally across the top of the T-zone.
- Worry lines
These create an “eleven” shape between the brows.
- Bunnies
These etch the bridge of the nose horizontally between the eyes.
- Crow’s feet
These radiate from the outer corners of the eyes.
- Laugh lines
These are around the nasolabial folds, creating a parenthesis around the upper lip.
- Lip lines
These are vertical hatches around the mouth.
- Marionette and jowl lines
These frame the chin vertically. When the cheeks droop, jowl wrinkles form.
